Many Faces

These are the many faces of Elliana…

Discovering life

Avery has been trying to figure out this whole baby in mommy’s tummy thing. Here have been the progression of her thoughts over the last few weeks.

  • “so does the baby eat through your be bo (belly button) or how does it get food?” This was followed by every time I sat down, Avery would come running with her water cup and try to pour water or milk into my belly button because she thought the baby was thirsty.

  • “so how does the baby get out of your tummy? Do you think it can come out for my birthday party and then go back in?”

  • “Was I in your tummy when I was a baby? Was Elliana?

  • Avery: “So when I get to be a baby again will I go back in your tummy?

Me: “You don’t become a baby again. You just keep getting bigger and bigger until one day you’re as big as mommy.”
(she now sat really still and just thought for about 2 minutes before asking…)
Avery: “so when you were a baby, were you in your own tummy?”

  • Tonight’s question was: “Was daddy in your tummy when he was a baby?”

I won’t even tell you the conversations we’ve had about nursing! She still remembers me nursing Elliana so there have been many interesting conversations! Her little brain is working overtime trying to figure this whole baby thing out =)

Quote of the Day

Avery: “moooooomy!!! stop running. You’re bouncing the baby up and down in your tummy. Maybe when that baby comes out, you can start running again. You’re making me nervous.”

To Share or Not To Share

Avery’s conversations over the topic have been something like this throughout the past week…

“mommy, its not fun to share. You say its fun, but its more fun to not share.”
“I don’t like to share. I want to just keep things for myself.”
“Sharing is too hard. Can’t she just watch me play with my things?”

Pretty valid questions and pretty truthful as well. Life probably does seem like it would be more fun to hoard everything to yourself. But how do you explain to a 2 year old the falseness of that thinking?

I attempted yesterday. We started the day in conversation about one of our family friends who had had a baby last month. We talked about what we could “share” with them to help them because new babies were hard work, and Mrs. Ellie and Mr. Josh were probably very tired. Avery thought about sharing her dolls, but I suggested how about we share our food. So we all went to the grocery store, and she helped me shop for stuff to make dinner for them. She then helped me cook and put everything together all the while we were talking about how when we love others like God tells us to love them, we need to share with them.
We dropped off dinner, and I was pretty confident that Avery was starting to understand the concept that loving others requires us to share and show kindness. She even stated, “babies are hard mommy. I bet sharing our food with Mrs. Ellie made her happy.” As I was just about to get excited about her understanding, her next sentence went like this.

“Elliana, don’t you take that from me! I will not share my lip chap! MOOOOOOOMMMMY. I don’t want to share my lip chap with Elliana!”

Oh well…we’ll keep working on it. =) I guess it takes more than a day to convince a 2 year old, so I’ve deliberately spent the day doing group activities that promote sharing. We’ll see if it works!

2 are better than 1

Yes, Elliana is wearing panties outside of her pants. She is also wearing panties under her pants in case you were wondering.
The panties on the outside are her favorite, and when she found them while I was folding clothes, she sat down determined to get them on. I took pity on her and helped her get them on over her pants. I guess if 1 pair work good, than 2 pair work even better.

Elliana’s first haircut

I gave Elliana her first haircut last week. She’s getting her first haircut just a few months after Avery got her first hair cut =) Its kind of fun to have a kid who has hair before her 2nd birthday! Here are some pictures of her first cut. I took about a 1/2 inch off the back. She was beginning to grow a mullet!
