(warning: This post is about to have way too many pictures in it!)
There is just something about family that makes me smile. My kids could be going stupid but if they do it while I’m sitting in my parent’s house, I don’t mind. Well, maybe a little but I mind a whole lot less than I would if I were sitting in my own house listening to them go crazy!
All that to say, last week I drove the kids and I to Iowa to stay with my family for a week. I asked Brent if he thought I could make the trek by myself, and he replied, “There’s only one way to find out.” So find out we did.
The 12 hours wasn’t too bad and the kids did amazing in the car. The 6 potty/poopy diaper stops were all manageable and didn’t even add that much time onto the trip. God gets all the glory for how easy that road trip ended up being!
The week itself went way too fast! A little recap:
The first couple days were spent in Des Moines with my sisters.
Then we left Des Moines and drove up to Cedar Rapids to stay at my parent’s house for the rest of the week.
We spent the week loving the attention and the relaxation that my parents bring. We played inside, we played outside. I enjoyed sitting on the couch upstairs while my mom played with the kids downstairs
Wednesday night, the little guy woke up in the middle of the night sick. He was up all night with a fever of 103 and was sick, sick, sick. Again, my family was amazing and rearranged their schedules to help me out. My brother-in-laws picked Brent up from the airport, my mom took the girls into Iowa City to go to the Children’s Museum, while I took Justus to the doctor, got him some meds, held him, held him, held him, and then tried to pack. He finally came around enough so I felt comfortable putting him in the car, and we drove back to Des Moines to meet up with daddy.
Luckily we got there before the snow started falling! What was supposed to be our last day before driving back consisted of a joint birthday party for the little man and my brother-in-law. My sister’s and their families have never been to one of my kids b-days before so this party was really special for me.
Then we got stuck in the snow…or at least Interstate 35 South did. Which meant no traveling South on Saturday so instead we played some more!
Thankfully Brent was with us for the drive home on Sunday. (have I said how amazing he is that he flew up there for the sole purpose of driving us home because he knew how tired I would be after a week with all three kids by myself?!!! I’m pretty lucky!) The kids did amazing on the drive home as well. I’ll leave you with a little video of the little guy the last 45 minutes of our 12.5 hour drive home. He was delirious by this point.
All in all, it was a great trip and it gave me tons of confidence to tackle the road again soon. A huge thanks to my family for being so incredibly awesome. I love you guys!!
